Driving in America can be very different than driving in the UK. Here are some simple rules of the road to help get you started..
- Public transport in Central Florida can be very limited. It is virtually impossible to get anywhere without a car and taxis can be very expensive. Also, be aware of peak rate times when using Uber, Lyft or other car hire apps. We would recommend a rental car during your stay and if you would like more information just let us know.
- Seat belts are compulsory in Florida and it is very likely that you will be pulled over by the police for a traffic violation if you ignore this rule
- Interstates and highways are the major road systems in Florida. Varied speed restrictions will be signposted on the verges. Exits are made by using ramps, which can build up traffic quickly. Caution needs to be taken to follow the rules and speed limits of the roads.
- Do not drive intoxicated – it is very illegal and taken very seriously. In addition, it is also unlawful to have any open alcohol container in your car.
- We recommend purchasing a Sunpass (prepaid toll device) for the toll roads. If you are headed to Miami, for example, cash toll booths are no longer available.
